Summer Reading List

Greetings from the West Coast! No, I haven't moved yet but I'm here for the week so posting may be a little spotty. That being said, Saturday was the first official day of Summer and I love to have a stack of books to dive into every summer. This summer, that stack is even bigger because I am going to be traveling most of July. What's on your reading list? Do tell!

1. "Fangirl" by Rainbow Rowell- My sister read this quirky coming of age story by the author of "Eleanor and Park" in one day and loved it.

2. "The Secret Life of Violet Grant" by Beatriz Williams - The Greenwich, CT native, Beatriz Williams, is at it again with her novel after one of my all-time favorite books "100 Summer." This story combines 1960's Manhattan with a 1910's German love story. Cannot wait to start!

3. "Cartwheel: A Novel" by Jennifer Dubois - This novel is reminiscent of the Amanda Knox trial with critics calling it "the next Gone Girl." I love mysteries and thrillers with strong female protagonists so I'm so excited to pick this one up.

4. "It Happened One Wedding" by Julie James- I love romance writer Julie James and this book was no exception. She writes light-hearted love stories usually set in Chicago, which I love. A total beach read.

5. "The Vactioners: A Novel" by Emma Straub - on the NYT Best Sellers list and one of the hot books for summer.

6. "One Lavender Ribbon" by Heather Burch - "Can a stack of long-hidden love letters from a WWII war hero inspire a heartbroken woman to love again?"

7. "The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair: A Novel" by Joel Dicker

Not Your Grandmother's Pearls

June birthdays rejoice because your birthstone is getting revamped. I've seen so many cool/hip pearl earrings, rings, necklaces and accessories that are changing the way we look at pearls. I particularly like the Sophie Bille Brahe gold and pearl necklace and all of the cool earring cuffs. The classic, preppy staple is becoming a little edgier and it works for me!

My Life Lately 6.16.14

June has been busy busy!
+Business at johnnie-O is booming - we had a great opening party at the NYC pop-up shop and we had a great time at Seredipity's "Horsing Around" polo event
+Renovations on 2 of the 3 John Street cottages are underway with the one cottage completely done and the gate house cottage almost there
+ I've done a bit of shopping/splurging - the perks of saving money by living at home! (re: Celine bag, new luggage and monogrammed passport cover) New bedding up next!
+I spent the weekend at our house on Queechy Lake with my family - the pups love it up there!
+Went to the City Squash Bash, which is always a great event for an amazing cause
+Went to dinner at the Beatrice Inn (fabulous company and food!)
+I, unfortunately, lost in squash to Riley, which I am not okay with. There will be a rematch in the near future...

Hope you all had a nice weekend!

Technology Thursday: Raved

As many of you know, I am moving to Los Angeles at the end of the summer and one of the things I am so excited for is the influx of healthy eateries! While NYC has some of the best restaurants in the world, LA seems to be ahead of the curve when it comes to healthy food trends. One of the ways I like to keep all of my favorite restaurants and restaurants I want to go to organized is an application called Raved. I can create lists like "Restaurants I Want to Go to in LA" and "Best Bars in NYC." It doesn't just have restaurants, Raved has clothing boutiques, salons and spas. You can follow "uber ravers" like Bobby Flay and GQ magazine and you can search by cities and categories. You can also follow me because I got uber raver status!

When you click on a restaurant, store, spa, etc., it brings you to a screen where you can see who raved it and what people are saying. The great thing is that they only publish comments from "uber ravers" so it gets rid of over-eager business owners yelping their restaurant a million times. I recently searched for best hair salons in Greenwich and was happy to check out the comments and raves. They also have menus built in as well as the phone number, website and ability to connect to open table to make reservations.

I am hooked! There are so many great restaurants I want to eat in and shops I want to shop in when I get to the West Coast and this is the perfect way to keep them organized. It is also a great travel app. Say I was visiting Houston and wanted to see what the best restaurants are and quickly scan the menus - done! You can also check out where your friends love to eat and save amazing lists.

I highly recommend this app for anyone living in a metropolitan area or anyone who will be visiting a metropolitan area who wants to find out what people are saying about the best restaurants, spas, stores, etc.

I added a Raved social icon on the side of my blog and you can also find my profile here! Download the app and see what Raved is all about. It is an absolute must-have.

Tuesday Treats: Paleo Pancakes

As many of you know, I go through paleo phases where I'll go a week here or there or a day here or there following the paleo diet guidelines. I am a huge foodie so paleo for life just doesn't work for me. Burrata and fresh baguette is just too delicious to give up forever! I came across this recipe for paleo pancakes the other day and am hooked! They are so easy to make and require few ingredients. They are the perfect, balanced breakfast or snack. I like to put almond butter on mine for a meal complete with protein (eggs, almond butter), good fat, omegas and carbs (banana). I'd love to hear from you guys about your favorite healthy recipes too!

Makes 4 (I usually cut this recipe in half and make one big pancake)
- 1 banana
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 teaspoon of chia seeds
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 pinch of sea salt

1. In a medium bowl, mash the banana to a smooth texture. Add the eggs and whisk thoroughly until the "batter" is fully combined. Add chia seeds, cinnamon and sea salt

2. Heat a pan over medium flame and grease with coconut oil or other paleo approved method. Ladle the batter into the pan and cook for approximately 60 seconds per side ( I like to keep them on a little longer)

3. Serve with almond butter or vanilla agave syrup and berries

A Cabin by the Lake

This rainy weather makes me want to curl up in front of the fire with a cup of coffee in a small cabin by the lake. Anyone else?
